Grgich Hills Estate
In 1976, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay made history when it was named the top white wine at the legendary Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting that shocked the wine world and put California on the map. The winemaker behind this groundbreaking achievement was Miljenko "Mike" Grgich, earning him the title of the "King of Chardonnay."
The following year, in 1977, Grgich founded Grgich Hills Cellar in Rutherford, the heart of Napa Valley. His wines quickly gained international acclaim and were enjoyed at the tables of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, as well as Queen Elizabeth II. In 2007, the winery was renamed Grgich Hills Estate to emphasize its commitment to producing wines exclusively from its own estate-grown grapes.
Since 2017, Violet Grgich, Mike’s daughter, has led the estate as President, carrying on her father’s legacy of excellence. Under her leadership, Grgich Hills Estate has deepened its commitment to sustainability, achieving Regenerative Organic Certification in 2023—an honor awarded to only a select few wineries worldwide. The estate’s dedication extends beyond winemaking, ensuring the well-being of both the land and the people who cultivate it.
Violet Grgich
Violet Grgich pursued her studies at the University of California, Davis, where she took courses in biology, chemistry, and oenology, all while earning a bachelor’s degree in music. She later obtained a master’s degree in harpsichord from Indiana University before joining Grgich Hills Estate full-time in 1988. Over the years, she played a key role in sales and marketing, gaining hands-on experience across all aspects of the business before becoming President in 2017.
In 2024, Violet was honored with the Impactful Leader Award at The North Bay Business Journal’s Women in Wine Awards, recognizing her leadership and commitment to sustainable winemaking.
