AN EVENING OF CULTURE, COMEDY AND COMMUNITY - RAKUGO IN ENGLISH!

Edo-era Amusements: Mt. Oyama and Comic Storytelling

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 6th 7:00 TO 9:00 PM IN AKASAKA

The Harvard Club of Japan, in collaboration with the Princeton Club of Japan and the Yale Club of Japan, is pleased to present a performance of Japanese traditional rakugo storytelling in English by professional rakugo artist Tatekawa Shinoharu (Yale '99, pictured). To provide the background of the evening's rakugo tale, Alice Gordenker (Princeton '80) will give a brief talk illustrated with images from Edo-era woodblock prints as she explains how Mt. Oyama, in present-day Kanagawa prefecture, was once one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Japan. With that as context, Shinoharu will present the first-ever English translation of the "Oyama-mairi" 大山詣り rakugo, which follows a group of Edo townspeople on their misadventures during their pilgrimage to the mountain. The performance will be followed by a reception with light drinks and finger foods. Guests welcome.
