Food for All People:

Leading Japan’s Largest Food Bank During COVID-19

second-harvest-staff--1-

The HBS Club of Japan welcomes Charles McJilton, the founder and CEO of Second Harvest Japan, for a special webinar session on August 5th. Second Harvest is the largest food bank in Japan and provides support for over 300 welfare organizations, NPOs and community groups in Japan.

Charles will discuss the role Second Harvest Japan has played in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and share how the HBS Club of Japan donation of 750,000 yen in May 2020 helped deliver 30,000 meals to those in need.

Charles will share how he began pioneering food banking in Japan in 2000 and how they went from just 15 food donors in 2007 to over 1,800 today without any traditional “sales approach” we associate with NPOs/NGOs. As an adjunct professor at Sophia University teaching NGO Management he continually looks for ways to apply what he teaches to his work at Second Harvest Japan. One specific topic he will touch on is applying adaptive leadership to solving problems. As business leaders this is of particular interest to us and we can learn how this nonprofit leader applies this philosophy to tackle difficult challenges.

Join us to learn more about Second Harvest Japan and its activities, and to find out how the organization and NGO’s similar to it are contributing to making Japan a better place to live for many of the least fortunate. HBS Club of Japan members, Harvard Club of Japan members and their guests are welcome to join this webinar.
