The Harvard Business School Club of Japan (HBSCOJ) Business Award Ceremony for 2015

Please join the HBS Club of Japan and the Harvard community on December 4, 2015 in recognizing the achievements of Ms. Kimie Iwata, Corporate Advisor of Shiseido Co., Ltd. and Chairperson of the Japan Institute for Women’s Empowerment and Diversity Management, as the recipient of Business Stateswoman Award and Mr. Akira Matsumoto, Chairman and CEO of Calbee, Inc. as the recipient of Business Statesman Award.

The Harvard Business School Club of Japan introduced the Business Statesman of the Year Award in 1994 and the first Business Stateswoman of the Year Award in 1996.  These awards are designed to honor individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in business throughout their careers as well as personal integrity and contribution to the community.   

Ms. Kimie Iwata received her BA in Liberal Arts and Science from the University of Tokyo in 1971. She joined the Ministry of Labor specializing in issues surrounding working women and international labor issues. She served as the Director-General of the Equal Employment, Children and Families Bureau. Following the Ministry of Labor, Ms. Iwata joined SHISEIDO Co., Ltd. in 2003, becoming Representative Director and Executive Vice President in 2008. She oversaw HR management and corporate social responsibility activities, to promote diversity and inclusion. She is currently serving as Corporate Advisor to Shiseido, as Chairperson of the Japan Institute for Women’s Empowerment and Diversity Management, on the Audit & Supervisory Board Member at Kirin Holdings Company, Limited, a Director at Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., and as a member of Gender Equality Council at the Cabinet Office, among others notable contributions.

Mr. Matsumoto’s career started at Itochu Corporation in 1972 after receiving a Ph.D. in agriculture from Kyoto University. He was appointed as the Director & General Manager of Sales Division at Century Medical, Inc., an affiliate company of Itochu. In 1993, he left Itochu to become the President of Ethicon Endo-Surgery Japan (Johnson & Johnson Company). In 1999, he became the President of Johnson & Johnson K.K.  In 2009, he became the Chairman of the Board & CEO of Calbee, Inc., a well- recognized snack brand. In his years as the Chairman, he has instituted a change mindset to the organization through his leadership and has literally doubled company sales.
