Clare Chase, Harvard School of Music with the shamisen player Hidejiro Honjo

Clare Chase and shamisen player Hidejiro Honjo will present the Japanese premiere of a work by Dai Fujikura. This work was co-commissioned by Hakuju Hall and Claire Chase in cooperation with the Harvard School of Music. It was a Fall 2019 project. This is the performance that the long-awaited Japanese premiere, four years after its completion in 2021 due to the new Corona pandemic. Claire Chase appeared at Hakuju Hall in 2014 as a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). She captivated the audience with her outstanding technique, versatile style, and wide range of musicianship, breaking through existing contemporary music. Honjo Hidejiro also performed at “Mostly Fujikura @Hakuju Hall” in November 2023 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hakuju Hall and “Hakuju Hogaku Festa 2024” the following January, and continues to explore the possibilities of the shamisen regardless of genre.
Dai Fujikura's friend Claire Chase and Hidejiro Honjo, who became his shamisen master. With the support of Harvard University, a new world of sound is now opening up.

Claire Chase, described by The New York Times as “the North Star of her instrument’s ever-expanding universe,” is a musician, interdisciplinary artist, and educator. Passionately dedicated to the creation of new ecosystems for the music of our time, Chase has given the world premieres of hundreds of new works by a new generation of artists, and in 2013 launched the 24-year commissioning project Density 2036. Chase co-founded the International Contemporary Ensemble in 2001, was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2012, and in 2017 was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. She served as the Richard and Barbara Debs Creative Chair at Carnegie Hall for the 2022-23 season. Chase is currently Professor of the Practice at Harvard University and a Creative Associate at The Juilliard School.

Studied under Hidetaro Honjo. Studied in New York under an ACC Fellowship. He was a Cultural Exchange Officer of the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Solo recital at Wigmore Hall, London. Performed the world premiere of “Shamisen Concerto” by Dai Fujikura, which is currently being performed again in Japan and abroad. Performed with Ryuichi Sakamoto three times. In 2022, he performed the world premiere of Toshi Ichiyanagi's “Double Concerto for Violin and Shamisen” and won the 77th Japan Arts Festival Grand Prize. He was selected as an artist-in-residence at U.C.
DAVIS in the U.S., where John Cage and others have served.
