A FEW SEATS LEFT: Author Adam Komisarof on "What is Your Acculturation Strategy?"

Brown graduate Adam Komisarof, Professor at Reitaku University, will give practical tips for anyone living and working in a multicultural environment to optimize your effectiveness and happiness by consciously applying your best acculturation strategy.

What is your acculturation strategy, and is it working for you? Anyone living and working in a cross-cultural setting creates, either consciously or unconsciously, a pattern of attitudes and behaviors that dictate how much we choose contact with and participation in the new culture vs. maintenance of our heritage culture. “Assimilators” for example tend to blend into the dominant culture at the expense of maintenance of heritage behaviors, while “integrators” try to interact and cooperate with the dominant culture but seek to maintain a clear separate identity based on one’s heritage.

Adam Komisarof PhD (graduate of Brown University, Prof. at Reitaku University, author of At Home Abroad) will explain the four most common acculturation strategies and discuss his research on successful and challenging acculturation in Japan by several dozen prominent Americans and Europeans in a range of fields and life roles. Participants will learn:

--what are acculturation strategies and their influence on intercultural communication.

--about their own acculturation strategies through guided exercises and discussions.

--how to align acculturation strategies in order to improve intercultural relationships.

This workshop is valuable for anyone in Japan, whether Japanese or not, who is involved in a cross-cultural setting at work, home or elsewhere and wants to have happier and more productive interactions with others.
